Introduction
DM NOTE: The party resumed the activity from the previous session, in media res, due to the time away from the game by yours truly.
From the kitchen the group moved north, finding a locked door. They smashed the lock and barged through, finding themselves in a storage area. It is quite large, and contains two wagons full of goods stolen from caravans.
A set of double doors in the west wall brings them back into the entry lean-to.
They go back through the dining room and break into the room to the west. This room is a magic-user’s bedchamber. They find books, parchment, quills and ink, and two bottles of wine. All of these items are carried back to the wagons in the storage area.
Having gone through all of the rooms they can find on this level, they decide to investigate the flames they can see at the bottom of the stairs from the slave quarters.
Boris gets the idea of going back into the long hallway, and going down the “back” stairs.
At the bottom of this long stair is a room, empty except for an orderly arrangement of small piles of ash on the floor. They guess that this must be where the Burned Ones waited until summoned by the gong at the entrance.
Around the corner they can see flames flickering, and beyond a portcullis-style barred door, a wall of flame obscuring the other end of what may be a large chamber. They do manage to pick this lock, and begin to enter cautiously, looking for traps. Scribbles goes forward to investigate the wall of flame, and determines it is but an illusion - as it gives off no heat!
All of the men ready weapons and the crossbowmen move out toward the flank. They charge through the wall of flame to interrupt a scene of horror! At the far end of the room is a magic circle and a sorcerer completing a ritual of some kind. It appears he is about to sacrifice the third slave boy (that they had not yet been able to locate). The sorcerer’s apprentice begins to cast a spell, and Messer throws a javelin, hitting him in the shoulder and disrupting the spell casting.
A great pyre is growing and billowing from a brass bowl full of crackling, spitting oil. The sorcerer on the far side is chanting away, oblivious to what is going on. As he continues to chant, Boris runs through the magic circle and kicks over the bowl of flaming oil. It spills and splashes, with burning oil now on Boris’ legs and feet!
The ritual now interrupted, the sorcerer screams, “NOOOO” as the fire elemental moves across the room, burning everyone in sight. Crow and Raven fail their saving throws and are burned to death.
RIP Crow (#6) and Raven (#7)
Scribbles casts Floating Disc, vertically, as a shield while Messer uses a short sword taken from a Burned One to attack the elemental.
Crow stands up, animated by the fires of the elemental, and attacks! He is killed again, and Braun moves forward to behead Raven’s burned, smoking corpse. The crossbowmen are able to shoot Crow and take him down, again!
Scribbles notices that the elemental is still attached to the burning bowl by an umbilicus of fire, running across the floor. As some of the group charge the sorcerer, the rest run to the trail of flame and begin to pour Holy Water on it. The umbilicus is severed, but not before the elemental kills another of the hirelings.
Messer rescues the sacrificial boy and brings him outside.
With two of the three slave boys rescued, they decide it is a success and head for home and safety. They bed down in Xathok and continue back to Sojenka.
